Mount Barker

Hills residential boom spurs greater demand for power

The Mount Barker and Eastern Hills region of Adelaide is one of the fastest growing residential areas in Australia with an average electricity load growth rate of 6% per annum, compared to a State average of 2.5%.

The population of Mount Barker has increased by 16% since 2006, and the State Government is preparing for a further 29,000 homes in the region.

What did the project involve?

The existing ElectraNet Mount Barker 132/66kV transmission Connection Point - a joint ETSA Utilities and ElectraNet site - supplies the entire Eastern Hills region. In order to meet the growing power demand, ElectraNet has installed a new 275/66kV 225MVA Connection Point at the newly-constructed Mount Barker South site.

To securely connect the new Mount Barker South Connection Point to the ETSA Utilities Eastern Hills network, ETSA Utilities has undertaken extensive works including the connection of two existing transmission lines and the construction of one new transmission line.

To manage the increased fault levels and thermal capacity, ETSA Utilities also upgraded the existing Mount Barker substation.

Why is this project important?

With strong residential growth in the Eastern Hills region, the $28.4 million project is designed to meet the region's increased power needs as well as maintain a safe, secure and reliable power supply into the future

The works will also support improved security of supply to local transformers connected to the ElectaNet radial transmission line from Mount Barker.

What is the timeline of this project?

The Mount Barker South Connection Point was energised in June 2011 and the Mount Barker distribution substation was completed by the end of 2011.
